In 1985 the Art Centre hosted the first ever British visit by a detachment from the terracotta army of the first emperor of China.
In 1988 it was the only UK venue for 'Gold of the Pharaohs', a glittering array of funerary treasure unearthed from the royal necropolis on the site of the ancient city of Tanis in the Nile delta. Attracting close to half a million visitors in a matter of weeks, 'Gold of the Pharaohs' remains the most visited historical exhibition to be staged anywhere in the UK, outside of London.
