In the late 1960s Paramount Pictures acquired STAR TREK from Desilu, the original production company. The response to the television syndication of the original series, the success of the animated series and the growth of the 'Trekkie' phenomenon led Paramount to begin discussions with Gene Roddenberry in 1975 regarding the creation of STAR TREK II. Before long, however, the focus of discussion had switched from a television series to a full feature film.

In March 1979, Paramount announced that STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE would re-unite the original cast and would be directed by veteran movie-maker Robert Wise of 'West Side Story' and 'The Sound of Music' fame. The storyline recalled Admiral Kirk to the command of a refitted U.S.S. Enterprise, and Mr. Spock to Starfleet duty, to utilise their experience of dealing with the unknown in confronting a mysterious, and potentially destructive, energy field heading for earth.
While the $44 million production was not warmly received by the critics, it had fans queuing around the block and a satisfied Paramount gave the go ahead for a sequel. There are now seven STAR TREK films in total - STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE; STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, in which an old adversary from the classic series returns with fatal results; STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK, mixes joy with tragedy as the resurrection of Spock is tempered by the death of Kirk's natural son, David, at the hands of the Klingons; STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME, in which the crew returning from the search for Spock take a detour in time and visit the 20th century to save the environment of 24th century Earth; STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER, in which the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise confront divine power, STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, in which the original crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise undertakes one last mission to bring about peace with the Klingon Empire, the historic enemies of the Federation; and now in 1995 STAR TREK: GENERATIONS defies the barriers of time to unite Captain Kirk with the crew of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION to save the galaxy from danger.
