On a stormy night in April 1717 a small pirate flotilla lost a desperate battle with the elements. The flagship, the Whydah, the pirate commander Sam Bellamy, and all of his crew were buried in the shifting sands of Cape Cod.
The story of Bellamy and the Whydah became part of Cape Cod folklore as the passing of the centuries obscured fact and fiction. Young Barry Clifford, however, was in no doubt that the tales told by his Uncle Bill were real enough and he vowed to recover the lost treasures of the Whydah.
By the early 1980s Barry Clifford was searching for the Whydah full-time. In 1982, and literally down to his last tank of fuel, he uncovered the first artifacts that suggested that he had found the final resting place of the Whydah. Confirmation came in 1985 when Barry and his colleagues found the ships bell.
Ten years, and 100, 000 artifacts later, work is still underway on recovering the cargo of the Whydah - the worlds most complete pirate treasure.
